Shawna-Tahirah Sterling first captured my attention with her spin on fashion; not only is her style classy and elegant, but it ties heavily into her faith. As an active member of the Apostolic community; She believes that Christians can be both saved and stylish, but also covered and classy. You might recognize this beauty from her on-going project called “Sisterhood of the Traveling Skirt”. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” you’ve guessed it, it’s something very similar. In the movie, the pants were only shared between four best friends over the course of their summer vacation. So far, Shawna-Tahirah has enlisted twelve girls to share one skirt; that’s incredible! Not only that, but she is also the founder of the MT. Zion Apostolic Summer School program, and the G.L.O.W foundation, (Girls Learning Our Worth). Here’s a little more about this inspiring role model.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself
A: I was born in the beautiful Caribbean island of Jamaica, in the parish of St. Ann. There I spent my former years as an active member of the Apostolic community until I migrated to Philadelphia after finishing high school. Philadelphia to me is “the city of brotherly love” and I’ve truly found a second home there.
Q: I migrated as well, but from Falmouth, Jamaica! What did you end up doing after moving to the U.S?
A: I obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the California University majoring in social work and also a Master’s degree in Social Work and Criminal Justice at Temple University. I serve as the Vice President of the Phi Alpha Honor Society and I am also the secretary for the Philadelphia Leads Honorary Society.
Q: Tell us a little about your faith
A: My journey with Christ started over eighteen years ago; I gave my life to Christ and got baptized at the age of eight. I’ve walked that journey with him fearlessly to this day and continually lives by his commands and teachings.
Q: How does your faith tie into your style?
A: One of my greatest desire is to let Proverbs 31 be seen in women of all ages and my zeal for the things of God, has lead me to promote modesty among women. I achieve this through my style of dressing since I believe that Christians can be Saved and Stylish, and also covered and classy. As proverbs 31:10 declares “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies”. This kind of woman is priceless, and rear, this woman is not like everyone else.
As the youth president at my church, I am aware that my role as a leader requires me to be humble and Christ-like. I am a firm believer in the teachings of Christ and believes that his leadership is the best example and emulates this within every aspect of my life.
Q: What is your definition of a Proverbs 31 aka a virtuous woman?
A: As a virtuous woman you should be set apart, your character and actions should represent God in every aspect of your life. She should be an example to others, Fear the Lord, be versatile, industrious, a hard worker, refined, honorable, well-respected, a good wife and the best of the best. There are many words that we can use to describe what a virtuous woman should be, but to really know that a person is ‘virtuous’ we should see it all in their actions.
Q: Tell us a little bit more about “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Skirt” project
A: This is a project where 12 girls are chosen and share ONE skirt. Each girl gets to wear the skirt, then pass it on to the next girl with a small token of love and a letter of encouragement. So far, the current skirt has been to 9 states and 3 countries.
Q: Biggest pet peeve
A: Getting lost while driving or stuck in traffic.
Q: Give us one bad habit that you have
A: I laugh at almost everything, even when the situation is serious.
Q: Any obsessions?
A: I’m OBSESSED with PINK and LOVES all things PINK.
